Dear Parents,
Beginning on Monday, October 4, our second-grade classes will be celebrating each student's talents and interests with the V.I.P. program. Each week, one student will be the featured V.I.P., and he or she will participate in one activity each day. Here is more information about these daily activities:
Monday:
The "personality web" is a poster that is completed by your child to reflect his uniqueness and special talents. The web may be created on poster board, or a commercial poster can be completed. All work is to be completed at home. If your child would like to create an original poster, ideas should be represented artistically and in written form and be placed or created directly on the poster. Ideas for poster topics include, but are not limited to, favorite pets, foods, people, sports, personal heroes, interesting life events and places visited, as well as areas of personal interest, including animals and other topics your child might dream up. Photos, pictures, fabric swatches or other interesting artifacts can also be attached. Please include a variety of topics to reflect your child's whole personality. The main topic is your child's unique and special self. If a commercially prepared poster is chosen, it should be completely colored, the information completed, and photographs attached. Please ensure that spelling is correct and that the work is neatly done.
Tuesday:
Please create an "estimation jar" by filling any plastic container with many of the same items so that your child's classmates can guess the exact amount of items within it. The container may be filled with wrapped candy, pretzels, or any other countable treat. The exact amount of the enclosed items needs to be either secretly taped to the underside of the jar's lid, or sent to your child's teacher in a separate envelope. We do not want the V.I.P. to know how many items are in the jar so that he or she can guess along with his classmates.
Wednesday:
Please help your child locate a "Million Dollar Word" to be shared with the class. A "Million Dollar Word" is one that is interesting and unknown to your child and that can be taught to the class. Each child will keep a log of his classmates' words. The website http://www.wordcentral.com/, as well as a dictionary or a thesaurus, can be used for choosing the word.
Thursday:
Please help your child to choose a poem, Bible verse, or song for memorizing and then reciting to his classmates. The memorized material should be typed and ready to photocopy for addition to our class poetry book. This is a wonderful way to develop oral presentation skills. Please choose material of substance and help your child to practice often enough to ensure a strong performance.
Friday:
Please send in a package of your child's favorite stickers to share with his classmates. Please remember to send one for every child in our class.
Children always look forward to their special week and enjoy these activities very much. I look forward to learning about your child.
Sincerely,
Sharon Rippen
